    Geometry and supersymmetry of heterotic warped flux AdS backgrounds

    We classify the geometries of the most general warped, flux AdS backgrounds of heterotic supergravity up to two loop order in sigma model perturbation theory. We show under some mild assumptions that there are no AdSnAdS_n backgrounds with n3n\not=3. Moreover the warp factor of AdS3_3 backgrounds is constant, the geometry is a product AdS3×M7AdS_3\times M^7 and such solutions preserve, 2, 4, 6 and 8 supersymmetries. The geometry of M7M^7 has been specified in all cases. For 2 supersymmetries, it has been found that M7M^7 admits a suitably restricted G2G_2 structure. For 4 supersymmetries, M7M^7 has an SU(3)SU(3) structure and can be described locally as a circle fibration over a 6-dimensional KT manifold. For 6 and 8 supersymmetries, M7M^7 has an SU(2)SU(2) structure and can be described locally as a S3S^3 fibration over a 4-dimensional manifold which either has an anti-self dual Weyl tensor or a hyper-K\"ahler structure, respectively.     Money in monetary policy design: monetary cross-checking in the New-Keynesian model

    In the New-Keynesian model, optimal interest rate policy under uncertainty is formulated without reference to monetary aggregates as long as certain standard assumptions on the distributions of unobservables are satisfied. The model has been criticized for failing to explain common trends in money growth and inflation, and that therefore money should be used as a cross-check in policy formulation (see Lucas (2007)). We show that the New-Keynesian model can explain such trends if one allows for the possibility of persistent central bank misperceptions. Such misperceptions motivate the search for policies that include additional robustness checks. In earlier work, we proposed an interest rate rule that is near-optimal in normal times but includes a cross-check with monetary information. In case of unusual monetary trends, interest rates are adjusted. In this paper, we show in detail how to derive the appropriate magnitude of the interest rate adjustment following a significant cross-check with monetary information, when the New-Keynesian model is the central bank’s preferred model. The cross-check is shown to be effective in offsetting persistent deviations of inflation due to central bank misperceptions.     The effect of hydrogen on the properties of metals, including titanium and its alloys, was investigated. The basic theories of stress corrosion of titanium alloys are reviewed along with the literature concerned with the effect of absorbed hydrogen on the mechanical properties of metals. Finally, the basic modes of metal fracture and their importance to this study is considered. The experimental work was designed to determine the effects of hydrogen concentration on the critical strain at which plastic instability along pure shear directions occurs.     Longitudinal response functions of 3H and 3He

    Trinucleon longitudinal response functions R_L(q,omega) are calculated for q values up to 500 MeV/c. These are the first calculations beyond the threshold region in which both three-nucleon (3N) and Coulomb forces are fully included. We employ two realistic NN potentials (configuration space BonnA, AV18) and two 3N potentials (UrbanaIX, Tucson-Melbourne). Complete final state interactions are taken into account via the Lorentz integral transform technique. We study relativistic corrections arising from first order corrections to the nuclear charge operator. In addition the reference frame dependence due to our non-relativistic framework is investigated. For q less equal 350 MeV/c we find a 3N force effect between 5 and 15 %, while the dependence on other theoretical ingredients is small. At q greater equal 400 MeV/c relativistic corrections to the charge operator and effects of frame dependence, especially for large omega, become more important. In comparison with experimental data there is generally a rather good agreement. Exceptions are the responses at excitation energies close to threshold, where there exists a large discrepancy with experiment at higher q. Concerning the effect of 3N forces there are a few cases, in particular for the R_L of 3He, where one finds a much improved agreement with experiment if 3N forces are included.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figure

    Computer model calibration with large non-stationary spatial outputs: application to the calibration of a climate model

    Bayesian calibration of computer models tunes unknown input parameters by comparing outputs with observations. For model outputs that are distributed over space, this becomes computationally expensive because of the output size. To overcome this challenge, we employ a basis representation of the model outputs and observations: we match these decompositions to carry out the calibration efficiently. In the second step, we incorporate the non-stationary behaviour, in terms of spatial variations of both variance and correlations, in the calibration. We insert two integrated nested Laplace approximation-stochastic partial differential equation parameters into the calibration. A synthetic example and a climate model illustration highlight the benefits of our approach

    In 2002, Serge Galam designed a model of a minority opinion spreading. The effect is expected to lead a conservative minority to prevail if the issue is discussed long enough. Here we analyze the marriage gap, i.e. the difference in voting for Bush and Kerry in 2004 between married and unmarried people. Copyright @ 2011 The Royal Society.Numerous types of uncertainty arise when using formal models in the analysis of risks. Uncertainty is best seen as a relation, allowing a clear separation of the object, source and ‘owner’ of the uncertainty, and we argue that all expressions of uncertainty are constructed from judgements based on possibly inadequate assumptions, and are therefore contingent. We consider a five-level structure for assessing and communicating uncertainties, distinguishing three within-model levels—event, parameter and model uncertainty—and two extra-model levels concerning acknowledged and unknown inadequacies in the modelling process, including possible disagreements about the framing of the problem. We consider the forms of expression of uncertainty within the five levels, providing numerous examples of the way in which inadequacies in understanding are handled, and examining criticisms of the attempts taken by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to separate the likelihood of events from the confidence in the science. Expressing our confidence in the adequacy of the modelling process requires an assessment of the quality of the underlying evidence, and we draw on a scale that is widely used within evidence-based medicine. We conclude that the contingent nature of risk-modelling needs to be explicitly acknowledged in advice given to policy-makers, and that unconditional expressions of uncertainty remain an aspiration

    A CD-ROM Based Agricultural Information Retrieval System

    An information retrieval system for agricultural extension was developed using CD-ROM technology as the primary medium for information delivery. Object-oriented database techniques were used to organize the information. Conventional retrieval techniques including hypertext, fulltext searching, and relational databases, and decision support programs such as expert systems were integrated into a complete package for accessing information stored on the CDROM. A multimedia user interface was developed to provide a variety of capabilities including computer graphics and high-resolution digitized images. Information for the disk was gathered and entered using extension publications which were tagged using an SGML-based document markup language.
